In Defense of Nonlife

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, my client has suffered from a public relations problem for approximately 13.8 billion years.

The charge is familiar. Nonlife is said to be inert, lifeless, empty, and without purpose. It is treated as the backdrop against which the real drama of existence unfolds. Life, we are told, is the miracle. Life is precious. Life is sacred. Life is the point. Nonlife is merely everything else.

Today I intend to offer a defense.

For most of my life I listened to intelligent people discuss life with endless fascination. Scientists debated its origins. Philosophers debated its meaning. Theologians debated its purpose. Entire libraries were devoted to explaining consciousness, intelligence, and the apparent uniqueness of living things. The conversation was often fascinating, but after many years I began to notice something peculiar. Almost no one seemed interested in nonlife. There were exceptions, of course. Every university seemed to possess at least one chemistry professor who regarded carbon with undisguised affection and one geology professor who believed a good rock formation deserved the same respect most people reserve for great literature.

This struck me as odd.

After all, life arises from nonlife. Every living thing is constructed from non-living components. The atoms that compose our bodies are not alive. The molecules from which our cells are built are not alive. The particles from which those atoms are assembled are not alive. Remove the chemistry of nonlife and life disappears instantly. Remove life and nonlife continues much as before.

The relationship is not quite as one-sided as we have been led to believe.

Consider the age and scale of the universe. For hundreds of millions of years after the Big Bang there were no oceans, forests, bacteria, whales, or human beings. There were only particles, radiation, gravity, and the gradual formation of stars. For billions of years thereafter, the universe remained a place without life as we understand it. Even today, after nearly fourteen billion years of cosmic history, life appears to occupy only a tiny fraction of existence.

Astronomers estimate that the observable universe contains roughly two trillion galaxies. Each galaxy contains hundreds of billions of stars. Around many of those stars orbit planets, moons, comets, and vast clouds of dust and gas. Yet the only world known to harbor life remains a small rocky planet circling an ordinary star in one unremarkable galaxy among trillions.

If the universe were casting votes, nonlife would win by an overwhelming margin.

This is not an argument against life. It is simply a reminder that life is not the default condition of the cosmos. The universe appears to possess a strong preference for stars, planets, black holes, nebulae, and empty space. Life, at least from our present perspective, seems to be a rare and fragile phenomenon arising within an overwhelmingly non-living reality.

Indeed, one might even argue that life interrupts the elegant symmetry of nonlife. A crystal requires no metabolism to achieve beauty. A snowflake displays intricate order without consciousness. Spiral galaxies wheel through space in patterns so magnificent that they inspired entire mythologies long before human beings understood what they were seeing. The laws of physics produce astonishing complexity without ever consulting a living organism.

Yet we rarely pause to admire this.

We tend to treat nonlife as scenery.

A more balanced view might recognize that nonlife accomplished quite a lot before life ever appeared. It forged the atoms in our bodies inside ancient stars. It assembled planets from clouds of dust. It produced oceans, continents, atmospheres, and chemical environments capable of supporting life. Even consciousness itself emerged from materials that, taken individually, possess no consciousness at all.

There is another consequence of this continuity that most people find difficult to forget once they hear it. The atoms composing your body are ancient beyond imagination. Most were forged in stars long before the Earth existed. They have been recycled endlessly through oceans, mountains, forests, and living creatures. Scientists point out that the atmosphere mixes so thoroughly that every breath we take likely contains molecules once breathed by historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Julius Caesar, or Socrates. Some of the atoms in your body may once have been part of a dinosaur, an oak tree, a whale, or another human being who lived thousands of years ago. Life comes and goes, but the atoms themselves remain, participating in one form after another. Socrates died. Lincoln died. The countless organisms that preceded us died. Yet the matter from which they were formed continues its long journey through the universe, indifferent to the boundaries we call birth and death.

This observation suggests that the line we draw between life and nonlife may not be as sharp as we imagine. We often speak as though the two occupy opposing camps. One side contains rocks, stars, and atoms. The other contains plants, animals, and people. Yet every living thing is composed entirely of entities from the first category. Life is not built from a special substance unavailable to the rest of the universe. Life is what ordinary matter does under particular conditions.

A whirlpool is not separate from water. A flame is not separate from combustion. In much the same way, life may not be separate from nonlife. It may simply be one of the things nonlife is capable of becoming.

At this point the prosecution usually introduces its strongest witness: consciousness.

Life, we are told, may be made from non-living matter, but consciousness changes everything. Rocks are not conscious. Stars are not conscious. Human beings are. Case closed.

It is an impressive argument until one asks a simple question.

What exactly is consciousness?

The honest answer is that no one really knows. We all experience consciousness directly. We know what it feels like to be aware. We can discuss memories, sensations, emotions, thoughts, and intentions. Scientists study it. Philosophers debate it. Entire libraries have been devoted to explaining it. Yet despite centuries of effort, no universally accepted explanation exists for what consciousness actually is or how it emerges from physical matter.

This does not mean that rocks think, galaxies dream, or electrons hold opinions about politics. It means only that we should exercise a measure of humility before declaring consciousness to be the bright and obvious line separating life from nonlife. We do not yet fully understand the phenomenon we are using to draw the boundary.

There is another curiosity here. Even among living things, consciousness is often treated less as a phenomenon than as a membership card. Human beings possess it, certainly. We readily extend some version of it to chimpanzees, dolphins, elephants, and dogs. As we move farther away from ourselves, however, our confidence begins to fade. Goldfish become questionable. Beetles become doubtful. Earthworms are often ignored altogether. Bacteria are usually dismissed without a second thought.

The pattern is revealing. The more a creature resembles us, the more willing we are to grant it significance. The less it resembles us, the more readily we place it outside the circle.

This may tell us something important, although perhaps not about consciousness itself.

It may tell us about human beings.

We often assume that consciousness matters in proportion to its resemblance to our own. We treat human awareness as the standard against which all other forms are measured. Yet a bacterium, an oak tree, a coral reef, and a blue whale have all solved the same fundamental problem. Each has persisted within existence using capacities suited to its own circumstances. None required human-like consciousness to participate successfully in the story of life.

If we struggle to understand the possible varieties of awareness among living things, perhaps we should be cautious before speaking too confidently about the relationship between consciousness and the non-living universe from which life emerged.

Indeed, there is a certain irony in the entire discussion. We celebrate consciousness as life’s greatest achievement while overlooking an awkward fact. Whatever consciousness may be, it arose from matter that we routinely describe as unconscious. Every thought, memory, dream, work of art, scientific discovery, and act of love emerged from atoms that, individually, possess none of these qualities.

If consciousness is indeed a miracle, it is a miracle that nonlife somehow accomplished.

Indeed, if intelligence can emerge from both carbon-based brains and silicon-based systems, the old assumption that intelligence belongs exclusively to life may prove as fragile as the assumption that life itself is separate from nonlife.

That possibility changes the entire discussion.

For centuries we have treated nonlife as a deficiency, as though a rock were merely a failed organism and a star merely an unconscious mind. But perhaps this reverses the relationship. Perhaps life is not the central fact of the universe from which everything else deviates. Perhaps nonlife is the central fact, and life is one of its most remarkable expressions.

If that is true, then nonlife deserves a little more respect than it usually receives.

The defense does not deny the wonder of life. A forest is wonderful. A dolphin is wonderful. A child is wonderful. Consciousness may indeed be one of the universe’s most extraordinary achievements. The defense merely suggests that we have become so enchanted by the performance that we have forgotten the stage, the theater, and the vast architecture that made the performance possible.

Life is astonishing. But nonlife was here first. It built every atom in every living thing. It forged the stars from which our elements emerged. It assembled the planets upon which life took root. It provided the materials from which every nervous system, every memory, and every conscious mind was constructed.

And long after every living thing has passed away, nonlife will remain.

If life is the universe becoming aware of itself, then nonlife is the universe that made awareness possible.
